[Places] Pico Areeiro, Walking Holidays Madeira

Pico Areeiro

Pico do Areeiro, at almost 1900 meters high, it is the second tallest mountain in the Madeira archipelago.

A place that is visited a lot during the winter snows. Since it is almost covered with clouds and fog during all time, it is advised that you only visit it when the skies are clear and when the clouds are low. On the top of it you can find one small hotel, a souvenir shop, and a Bar which you can visit to have a warm coffee during the winter (currently under rehabilitation because it has been closed for more than a decade, will open again in 2010).

The sightseeing from Areeiro is breathtaking, and it has a walking path, usually called “Levadas” to Pico Ruivo. So, that path is made only by foot. There are two connections, one with 7Km and another with 5Km, both linking to the top of Pico Ruivo (the tallest spot on the island). There’s also a connection to Curral das Freiras, a small village in the middle of the island, which we will show latter on this website.

The Curral das Freiras – Pico doAreeiro connection is one of the longest ones, taking you 7 hours on each direction by foot, so it is advised that you go there very well prepared. The easiest way to get to Areeiro is by far the Monte path, following down through Poiso, where you can find a typical Madeira Restaurant, and later the intersection that will lead you to Areeiro.

We advice you to visit this place only with the help of a experienced guider who knows himself around the island. Don’t get lost! And have fun and relax on your Walking Holidays or Levada Walks at Madeira Island!

Take a look at some photos of it’s fantastic view.
