[Places] Câmara de Lobos - where Madeira Wine is born

Câmara de Lobos, named after the finder of Madeira Island, Gonçalves Zarco also known as Gonçalves da Câmara de Lobos, is famous because of its fishing traditions and it is also the land where most of the internationally branded Madeira Wine is produced.

In addition, since population is about 16.800 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest villages in Madeira. So, in this village, everything seems amazingly beautiful and calm, from its fisherman’s dock, to the garden on the top of a single rock. The views to the sea and Cabo Girão are amazing. In there you can find some of the best typical restaurants in the region – the Espada Preta and the Lagar are only two among many good restaurants.

There are also traditional festivities every now and then, so you have a great chance on finding them when you visit. That is the case of Madeira Wine festivities – once in the year there’s a typical tradition in the region where people go across the hills to Funchal by the Estreito de Câmara de Lobos in order to celebrate the Madeira Wine, always in September, the season when the vines are cropped and the grapes are processed into wine.
